Lorenzo Wolff BIO 2024

Lorenzo Wolff is an unavoidable figure in the New York music scene. Between his studio Restoration Sound, his productions and his work as a community builder, you can’t go far without running into someone connected to him or his work.

A student of music from a young age, Lorenzo was playing in the bars of the tristate area long before he could legally enter. He’s never been far from the places where music is made, spending his twenties as a freelance bassist/utility low end aficionado touring, playing sessions and generally learning the “side of the glass” where you don’t press record.

Between all the gigging, songwriting and producing he was lucky enough to work under Scott Lehrer at 2nd Story Sound, cutting his teeth with a true master of the physics and science of capturing sound. After spending his formative years there he opened the first iteration of Restoration Sound, an intimate two room affair that ten years later would gradually evolve into the sprawling 4000 square foot, seventeen room facility it is today. Restoration Sound has grown to be a staple of the music scene and a haven of inspiration where Lorenzo and the musicians he works with can explore, expand and push boundaries. It features a Steinway M, a thirty two channel Neve 8068 from 1979 and an impeccable vibe.

As an engineer Lorenzo has helped to record Ye’s Grammy Nominated Donda (Album of The Year 2021), Taylor Swift’s Grammy Winning Folklore (Album of the Year 2020), and Midnights (Album of the Year 2023). He spent the better part of 2024 working for Ms. Lauryn Hill, vocal producing and recording her band.

Lorenzo’s true talent lies in his production. As a multi-instrumentalist and student of music history he stretches the boundaries of genres and is known for keeping an eye on history while composing forward thinking soundscapes. His last record under his own name was a biographical tribute to Judee Sill, celebrating the darker, more visceral side of her life in an album featuring Bartees Strange, Michael Cerveris and a wide swath of the artist’s who make up New York’s music scene (Down Where The Valleys Are Low: Another Otherworld for Judee Sill StorySound Records). His work as a producer for Ana Egge, Leslie Mendelson, Coyle Girelli, Scott Metzger and Josh Joplin solidifies his place as a distinctive voice in the musical landscape.
His next project is another musical hagiography, this time focusing on the life and work of Johnny Rodriguez, due to be released in 2025. Outside of his commercial work Lorenzo is trying to give back to his community with his newly formed “Resident C” program. It's in its second iteration, offering a space free of charge where musicians can access facilities that might otherwise be unattainable to them.
